Henri Rousseau

"Nothing makes me so happy as to observe nature and to paint what I see."

Henri Rousseau
worked as a customs officer and only began painting in his forties. He was self-taught and did not participate in the established French art scene. His subjects are dreamlike, peculiar, and almost surreal, and Rousseau is today considered one of the greatest naïve artists.
