John Bauer

1882–1918, Jönköping–Vättern

John Bauer’s images give Swedish folklore a form that still feels natural—dark, soft, and charged. His view of the wild is infused with tenderness; the trolls are heavy yet vulnerable, and humans are small yet present. Nature becomes a place where the inner world takes shape. He and his family passed away far too early in a tragic boat accident. Despite his short life, he left behind a vast, magical artistic legacy.
