William Morris

1869–1954, Walthamstow–London

William Morris was a British artist and one of the leading figures of the British Arts and Crafts movement. He is best known for his remarkable patterns, but was also a founder of the British socialist movement.

A contradiction arose between ideals and practice in Morris’s work. His aim was to create affordable yet beautiful objects for “ordinary” people, but in reality it was only the upper class who could afford his expensive designs.
